Star C. Foster (1973-2006)

121206_star.jpgHoustonist was sad to hear this weekend about the sudden death of Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster. She had complained about a pain in her foot, which she thought was caused by moves she made in dance class — but it turns out the pain was from a tumor in her leg that spread to her heart. On Sunday morning, she had a seizure and was soon dead from a pulmonary embolism.

The news, you can imagine, hit our friends at Phillyist hard — and us, too: Even though we never met Star, we wish we had had the chance. We're sure Houstonist readers join us in sending our sympathy and thoughts to her family and friends.

And even though you probably didn't know Star either, we want to share the chance to do something in her memory that'll help future generations. Star's family has set up a memorial scholarship fund at Central High School in Philadelphia, her alma mater; money from the fund will go to help female students who are aspiring writers. If you want to donate (and we can't think of many worthier causes than bringing more good writers into the world), here's the address:

Star C. Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund
Associated Alumni of Central High School
P.O. Box 26580
Philadelphia, PA 19141

(Make checks payable to AACHS.)
