29 daycare kids left alone in van

121506_bus.jpgPeople at the CVS at Yale and 20th yesterday afternoon noticed something weird in the parking lot: an unattended van with 29 kids crammed inside. Turns out they were left there by a driver from a nearby daycare center.

Charlene Johnson, whose daughter runs Dears Day Care on East 41st Street, told the Chronicle that she used "horrible judgment" in leaving the kids alone; she left, KHOU reported, to pick up another kid. Police apparently got several calls about the van and parents were called to pick their children up from the site — everyone was fine, but the parents, as you might imagine, were surprised. "I want to know how this could have happened," Latina Shaw, who has four kids enrolled in the center, told the Chron.

Police said charges probably won't be filed against Johnson, but they said there will be an investigation into the incident — perhaps dealing with why 29 kids were in a van meant to carry about half that many.
