Driver: Low gas prices caused fatal crash

010307_turn.jpgSo this really sucks: In Montgomery County yesterday evening, a guy checking out a sign advertising cheap gas caused a crash that killed another driver. The accident happened at around 5:30 p.m. at FM 3083 and Jefferson Chemical Road near Conroe, where the driver of a Ford Escort saw the gas prices at a Quick Stop station. He made a sudden left turn — presumably not out of the left lane — causing a driver to his left to crash into his car, killing a female passenger in his car and injuring four other people.

To blame, apparently, were the gas prices, which so enticed the Escort driver that he just had to turn in to the station. KTRK and the Chronicle report that police aren't sure whether the driver will face charges, but according to KHOU, charges are pending.

Update: A Houstonist reader who was on the scene gives a different version of the accident than the TV news did: "The guy was southbound on FM 3083 with his wife and two adult grandchildren in the back seat. As he came up on the gas station he saw the $2.05 price and turned in, not seeing the Cougar northbound on 3083, which T-boned him. The driver's wife was talking to us for a few minutes and then arrested and they could not bring her back. The other three passengers in the vehicle had minor injuries, and the Cougar driver had a broken hand."
