With five Golden Globe nominations and talk of possible Oscar nominations in the wings, the film adaptation of Dreamgirls is getting a lot of exposure. The soundtrack is currently on top of the charts, the movie is in the top five at the box office, and former American Idol star Jennifer Hudson is receiving lots of praise for her performance as Effie White in the movie.
While Hudson’s singing in the movie is good, you still can’t touch the original Broadway Dreamgirls' cast member, and former Houstonian, Jennifer Holliday’s performance from 1982. When she belted out “And I’m Telling You That I’m Not Going,” many ears perked at her soul-wrenching singing style that she turned that song into a #1 R&B hit, a pop hit, and Grammy winner.
This clip from the 1982 Tony Awards show isn’t the best in video quality, but it gives you a nice glimpse at Holliday’s vocal range and style. Holliday is afraid that the film version will “cancel her out as an artist,” but with vocal chords like hers, we don’t see how that could be possible.
