Informist: What You Didn't Know About..... Houston Arts

250107_oldbeerhouse.jpgDid you know that Houston has more than 500 cultural, visual, and performing arts organizations? Neither did we. We did however suspect that something strange was going on when we heard Houston had the second largest Theater District in the nation. Houstonist feels like our artsy professor step dad just bench pressed 2,000lbs.

The Orange Show for Visionary Arts is just one little guy in the multitude of Houston’s arts organizations, but Houstonist thinks if this group of 500 organizations were a high school, The Orange Show would be one of the cool kids. We went over to their house to play last Thursday, and any kid whose mom lets us drink free beer and screw stuff up is alright in our book.

Where is this house? Can you come too? Yes, little Houstonian, you can, and we’ll be more than happy to lead the way. The Orange Show not only runs the annual Art Car Festival, they also own The Beer Can House. The “House that Beer Built” is undergoing major restorations on the part of the Orange Show staff and volunteers, so we ventured out last Thursday to see what this “free beer” was all about.

To sum it up quite nicely, Houstonist experienced many things that fateful night. We drank, we laughed, we bled (due to a self inflicted copper wiring finger stab), we drank, we smashed, we built, we drank, we strung, we drank, we laughed, we cried, we talked, we drank, we laughed, we yelled, we drank, we talked, we drank, and so on. Ahh, the memories.

Houstonist wants you to live as we live: supporting our artsy professor step dad, rebuilding a house/ode to beer, and last, but certainly not least, drinking for free. The Orange Show will be hosting its FINAL Free Beer Happy Hour TONIGHT, and Houstonist wants you to experience it all, even the bleeding part.
