An interesting, but gruesome, story is developing about a MS-13 gang member who's now in custody in Houston: According to authorities in Honduras, 26-year-old Albin Zelaya decapitated his ex-girlfriend's parents because their daughter broke up with him.
According to KHOU, Zelaya was involved in a shootout between HPD officers, FBI agents and MS-13 members on a southeast Houston hotel parking lot in September. Four of the five MS-13ers were arrested, but the fifth, Zelaya, managed to get away. He left town, headed south and apparently ended up near San Pedro Sula, Honduras (which Channel 11 describes as a "tiny town," for some reason, though the city has nearly a million people in its metro area). There, authorities claim Zelaya cut his ex's folks' heads off with an ax on Christmas day while their 10-year-old son watched; as he was leaving the scene, he reportedly said he had killed the man and woman because their daughter broke up with him.
It's not clear what happened to Zelaya between Christmas and now, but the HPD gang squad, with the help of the FBI and a SWAT team, caught him in Houston this weekend. He's believed to have been involved in several crimes here and is being held without bond in the Harris County Jail on a burglary charge; he also appeared in federal court yesterday because he illegally re-entered the United States. HPD is scheduled to release more information about Zelaya and the other arrested MS-13 members today.
