Daily -ist List: Friday

Chinese New Year Spectacular

Houstonist was struck with an odd idea earlier today. Why not do something on a Friday night that isn't free, doesn't involve beer, and will be a cultural road trip for the eyes and ears? Yes, we sometimes have deep thoughts, especially when we get inspired by the idea to replace said beer with some kind of multi cultural drink like saki. Of course, we know saki is more of a Japanese treat, but what better way to celebrate the Chinese New Year than getting your cultural fill of Spectacular, and later, getting a cultural fill of saki from their neighbors to the East.

In all seriousness, this annual event has some of the most amazing performances you will ever see. It takes place in 29 cities all over the world, and Houston is lucky enough to have a show all to ourselves. According to local Chinese Americans, "the Chinese New Year Spectacular is an important platform for celebrating the New Year and appreciating traditional Chines culture and arts." The performances combine high tech design with ancient values, colorful costumes, graceful dancing, and "booming" drums to transport the audience back in time to ancient China.

The Chinese New Year Spectacular is hailed as a world class event, and only comes to Houston once a year, so take advantage. If you happen to stop by Zake later that night and see us celebrating the Chinese New Year in our own special way, feel free to join in!
