Friday Afternoon Videos: Super Bowl Shuffle

Super Bowl Shuffle - video powered by Metacafe
Houstonist is not picking sides on this weekend’s Super Bowl (well, at least not publicly), but we do feel the need to show the Chicago Bears Shufflin’ Crew’s “Super Bowl Shuffle” from the 1985-86 season for several reasons: 1) The Bears are in the Super Bowl this year, 2) The video is so campy, it’s funny 3) We have to support our fellow –ist site in the windy city (since there is no “Indianapol-ist” yet) 4) As far as we know, the Colts have not put out a music video

The rappers include Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, William “Refrigerator” Perry, and quarterback Jim McMahon, among other players. Payton and McMahon weren’t able to make the video shoot, so their parts were spliced in later – it’s noticeable, but hey, it’s a rapping football team, so who cares?

The “Super Bowl Shuffle” craze went beyond Chicago: the song hit #41 on the Billboard charts and, believe it or not, earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B performance (they lost to Prince’s “Kiss”). Over the years, a few parodies of the event appeared, including ESPN’s “Behind the Music” article and The Onion’s rumor of a Shufflin’ Crew reunion.
