Saturday shelterporn

If there's anything we at shelterporn like as much as a good modern house, it's a good Craftsman bungalow. So of course we're really fond of this Montrose bungalow, which has all the cool exterior details you'd expect coupled with a nicely renovated interior. (And yeah, we do realize that shelterporn's on Sunday rather than Saturday today — but that's life.)

Outside, the house has a great wraparound porch overlooking Welch Street, a private back yard and at least one palm tree — we've always wanted a palm tree, though we hear they can be more trouble than they're worth. But this isn't about practicality, is it? Inside, the rooms are lighted by cool Craftsman windows; there are pocket doors, a corner fireplace in the living room, an open kitchen/dining room that would be ideal for entertaining, and a master bedroom with a bay window.

Granted, the house isn't as spacious as, say, this River Oaks pied à terre, but it's comfortable — and that's exactly why we like bungalows. More important: It's not a soulless Inner Loop townhome. There's a lot to be said for that. Bedrooms: two. Bathrooms: two. Square feet: 1,438. Price: $389,000.

This house is open from 1 to 4 p.m. today, so stop by and check it out if you have a thing for Craftsman bungalows: 1114 Welch St.
