K-9 cop catches guy who broke into impound lot

020507_fence.jpgSo if you're an enterprising auto burglar, we suppose a lot where row upon row of unattended cars are parked would be almost irresistible. But remember this: If that lot happened to be a police impound facility, it's probably not a good idea to go sniffing around — if you don't believe us, ask the guy who was caught this morning at a First Ward impound lot.

The man was seen jumping the fence at the lot near Dart and Hickory around 12:30 a.m. Police made the scene and found the suspect hiding in one of the cars on the lot; he refused to give up, so the cops sent in a K-9 unit to, uh, gently persuade him by biting him on the arm. It worked.

This isn't the first time HPD has had problems with would-be burglars at the Dart Street lot: One high-profile incident there, in May, involved police shooting a man who was allegedly stealing tools and rushed at cops with a tire iron when they confronted him. "We've had multiple break-ins by suspects into the vehicles stored here, so surveillance was set up to try to catch these individuals," Sgt. Robert Steffen said.

This morning's suspect was arrested and treated for the dog bite. It's not clear what charges he might face.
