Good morning, Houston. We're still a little foggy from yesterday's Super Bowl parties — and from the point in the second quarter when we started thinking about when we might see the Texans in the big game (don't try it — it'll make your head hurt, trust us). If you got your no-more-football party on, this might not be a bad time to kick back, down a hangover cure and catch up on some news.
>> Selling the state lottery — cash cow or gamble?: Lawmakers are raising questions about privatizing the state lottery, a proposal Gov. Rick Perry is expected to make during Tuesday's State of the State address. Perry said selling the lottery to a private company would raise money for health care and research, but some legislators said it would be (in Sen. John Carona's words) "a short-term solution to a long-term problem." Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Washington, D.C., have considered privatizing their lotteries, but so far, no one's done it. More to come.
>> First daughter in court: No, we don't mean one of the Bush twins — Mayor Bill White's daughter Elena is expected to appear in court this morning for the beginning of her DWI trial. Elena White was arrested Aug. 1 after the was spotted weaving along Memorial Drive without headlights; Mayor White initially said she was in trouble, but after he hired high-powered attorney Rusty Hardin, he decided the arrest might have been HPD's mistake.
>> This just in: Some people actually weren't shot this weekend: A lot of bullets flew around here over the weekend: On Friday night, a man reportedly shot the stepfather of his 2-year-old child's mom — while he was holding the kid. The next morning, a boy in Channelview was accidentally shot in the arm while he and a friend played with a gun. Saturday afternoon, two or three men walked into a southwest Houston apartment complex and began shooting into an apartment in what police say may have been a gang-related incident; Saturday night, an argument at a southwest side club led to a shooting at a nearby gas station. And to round things out, a man was found dead in a southeast Houston parking lot, apparently of gunshot wounds, and two other men were shot during a Super Bowl watch party at a southwest Houston bar.
Today's weather: Remember how it was sunny over the weekend? Well, that should continue today — it's in the 40s now, but we'll see a high in the mid-60s this afternoon. Tonight, expect a low in the mid-40s under clear skies. Makes you wanna go outside, doesn't it? Be our guest.
