The law is so unfair sometimes

020507_check.jpgLast month, a Baytown woman ordered an inordinate amount of food from a Domino's pizza location, had it delivered and paid for the order by signing a fake name to a check drawn on a bank that no longer exists. And now she's in jail for it — and that apparently surprises her. Yeah, the law's funny like that sometimes, isn't it?

Harris County sheriff's deputies say Gwendolyn Simpson signed the name "Jesse Robinson" on a check for $122.25 she used to pay a Domino's order Jan. 18. (In case you wondered, $122.25 will get you five large pizzas, six orders of wings, five orders of cinnamon bread sticks and a two-liter soda to wash it all down with.) The delivery man returned to the Domino's on FM 2100 and discovered the check was from a bank that had gone out of business; deputies went to the house where the delivery was made, found Simpson there and arrested her. And it seems Simpson really was surprised she was getting in trouble: "Ms. Simpson told the deputy that she did not know why she was going to jail because she didn't think Domino's prosecuted for cases like this," according to a statement from the sherif's department.

Simpson is still in the Harris County Jail; the woman whose house the pizzas were delivered to, Tawana Robinson, was also arrested when deputies found three outstanding warrants against her.
