Ok, we realize maybe not everyone is as hysterically fanatical excited about the brain as a certain Houstonist contributor, but we all must admit the new traveling exhibit at the Houston Health Museum, Brain: The World Inside Your Head is pretty darn interesting.
The exhibit provides a hands-on and up-close look at the human body’s most essential and fascinating organ by exploring its development, geography and function. Trace the brain’s development from infancy through old age, learn the evolution of scientists’ understanding of the brain’s physiology and study the re-created skull of Phineas Gage a man who survived after his brain was pierced by a metal rod (hello? who wouldn't want to see that?).
Recently announced, experts from the Methodist Neurological Institute (NI), will present a series of engaging talks about the human brain and related topics at the Museum. The series, Brain Basics, will complement the Brain exhibit, and will continue with dates through April. The first lecture series took place this past weekend, with Dr. Dr. Stanley Fisher, Co-Director of the Movement Disorders and Neurorehabilitation Center, Methodist Neurological Institute, as he gave an overview of the brain. Future lectures include topics such as brain development, brain disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Alzheimer’s and Tourette’s syndrome, the history of mental illness, memory functions, emotions and perceptions, and the geography of the brain.
Next Lecture: Saturday, February 17, at 10 a.m., Dr. Ron Tintner, Co-Director of the Movement Disorders and Neurorehabilitation Center, Methodist Neurological Institute, will discuss the brain, music and perception.
