Becks, Houston. Houston, Becks.

020707_becks.jpgLet's go ahead and get the cordial introductions out of the way, there's a game to be won here, and a championship to defend. The MLS announced yesterday that David Beckham, former England captain-slash-current Real Madrid mid-fielder-slash-tabloid target is set to make his first and only Houston appearance on Oct. 7 with the LA Galaxy.

Becks five-year $250 million contract is the biggest in the history of American pro team sports, on an annual basis. The contract is permissible under what is known as the "Beckham Rule," which allows MLS teams to exceed their payroll limit to sign two players. Beckham is the first player to be signed under the rule, which was created to lure star players to MLS from abroad.

When originally announced, Houston soccer fans' hearts fluttered when it appeared that the Dynamo's season opener against the LA Galaxy on April 8th would host Beckham's MLS debut. However, since then, the former Manchester United Captain announced his decision to stay out his current Real Madrid contract, keeping him across the pond until June 30.

Houstonist is excited about what this means for the MLS and for the Dynamo. Becks' arrival is sure to increase league awareness, extended television coverage of games, and ultimately help Houston in the conquest for a soccer specific-stadium of our own. So to that, we say: "Houston welcomes you, Becks. Are you ready for some futbol?"
