McNair Wary on Carr

Per the Chronicle Texans Owner, Bob McNair, stopped just short of pushing quarterback David Carr under the bus saying, "We’ve got to get better consistency [at quarterback], either with David or with some additional help." The move is a change of pace for McNair who has been an advocate for Carr in spite of criticism from fans and media.

In case you missed it, Carr has been hot and cold - tending towards tepid - most of his five seasons under center for the home team. El numero uno in the 2002 draft, Carr is a talented quarterback who's not hit his stride in the NFL despite a record setting rookie season (most sacked quarterback). Though the Texans have added offensive weapons, like Andre Johnson and Eric Moulds, in an attempt to get the ball downfield, the offensive line continues to falter due to injuries, like Weigert's blown ACL, and the tasering of Big Fred Weary and the associated distractions.

There's an old adage in football that seems to fit this situation. "The offense can't do shit without good blocking up front," at least that's what coach told us in sixth grade. Based on our solid fantasy football performance this year, Houstonist recommends honoring Carr's contract extension and building up the offensive front.

Sure, "additional help" may be sought in the form of Jake Plummer should he and the Broncos part this off season and should the Texans continue trying to rebuild the Broncos organization at Reliant Stadium. But, bringing in Plummer or another veteran would not fix the root cause. The Texans should address the inconsistency in the offensive line.
