You might have heard about Baytown's serial rapist, the guy who attacked at least five young men last year — well, after making a break in the case last night, Baytown police arrested a suspect in the attacks. The arrest came quick on the heels of the rapist being featured on America's Most Wanted; we assume the chain of events wasn't coincidental.
The attacks began as early as April, with the latest having been reported in November. Police say the suspect — whose name they haven't released yet — is connected with a May 2006 attack in which the situation was the same as the others that involved the rapist. What was so unusual about the Baytown rapist, experts say, is that he preyed on men: The man reportedly preyed on young white men, attacking them at gunpoint or knifepoint in or near their homes. Though he robbed some of the victims, rape seemed his primary objective. "[Male-on-male rape] is the least prevalent kind of serial rape, and largely underreported," criminologist Jack Levin told the AP in December. For that reason, authorities were worried that the rapist might have attacked more victims who were too ashamed to come forward. Assuming the suspect police arrested is indeed the rapist, it'll be interesting to see if more do.
Baytown police have scheduled a press conference this morning to release more details about the arrest.
