For sheer television news drama, you just can't beat the opening lines of KHOU's report on local burglaries: They want your TV, your laptop and your jewelry. They're burglars, and they're hitting houses by the dozens in some Houston neighborhoods. Kinda makes you nervous, eh? That's why Houstonist has decided to never leave our house again. Takeout Taxi delivers, Rice Epicurean delivers, Netflix delivers, we can order underwear online — we're all set.
But for those of you brave enough to venture out, you might be interested in what KHOU has to say. Channel 11 analyzed Houston crime data to find the parts of town with the highest number of burglaries, and it came up with a few to avoid, the biggest of which stretches from Bellaire Boulevard to Westheimer in southwest Houston, which isn't a surprise. A couple other high-crime areas, also in southwest Houston, had similar numbers — on one section of one street, Ludington Drive, there were 54 burglaries in a year. The weird thing, though: All that crime is apparently taking place on one end of Ludington, but not on the other. The difference between the two ends of the street, KHOU reports, is apartment complexes: "I think it's easier for people to move around in these complexes. [There's a] lot of foot traffic in there," HPD Officer Andrew Duncan said,
Residents of the safe end of Ludington have done other things to cut down on crime, too, including making part of the street one-way, which reduces the number of cars cutting through their neighborhood, and paying for round-the-clock security patrols. Meanwhile, in the apartments, HPD has added officers and is working with the owners of the complexes — we'll see how it works.
