Well, not exactly, but it made for a damn good headline. So, after months of speculation, XM and Sirius satellite radio have merged. You can throw out all of those quarrels with your friends on which service is better, because soon it won’t matter anymore – all satellite owners will have Howard Stern, Oprah, NFL, and Major League Baseball, etc.
What does this have to do with Houston? Well, with the current state of terrestrial radio in this city, satellite radio has been the saving grace to hearing the same old Goo Goo Dolls in our car for the 5,000th time. Arguments have been made in favor of each service for their broad music choices. Unfortunately, with this merger, the merger of music and talk stations will take place, too. So, if you have a favorite station on Sirius or XM, there’s a good chance that it may morph into something else when the two companies complete the merger. We just pray that the music won’t be watered down to sound something like this.
Houstonist will keep enjoying our XM radio for now (especially Hear Music, Ethel, and XMU channels). We’re sure the FCC will be interested in the two entities becoming a monopoly.
