Houston Ultimate Tournament Benefits Habitat for Humanity

20070227_huc.jpgThis Saturday Houston Ultimate Community (HUC) is hosting the Fifth Annual Huckin' for Laura tournament to benefit Houston Habitat for Humanity.

Ultimate, as defined by the Ultimate Players Association, is:

Player defined and controlled non-contact team sport played with a flying disc on a playing surface with end zones in which all actions are governed by the 'Spirit of the Game™.
As defined by Houstonist, Ultimate is fun as hell and a great way to quit smoking. And, no it does not involve dogs.

In short, Ultimate is played by two teams of seven players who oppose each other on a field roughly the size of a football field. The offense tries to score by passing the disc (no running with the disc) to a receiver in the end zone. The defense tries to stop it. Got it? We didn't think so. Fortunately HFL is open to players to players of all skill levels.

Pearland's Laura Higgins was a ringer on the Ultimate field. Higgins was a prominent member of the Ultimate scene in Houston, and Texas as a whole, when she was murdered weeks before Christmas 2002. HUC subsequently renamed its annual hat tournament in her honor with all tournament proceeds slated to benefit a local charity.

Individuals interested in participating can register on the day of the event but are encouraged to register online in advance. Beware, you'll be asked to provide some insight into your skills. Don't get intimidated; that information is used to level playing field so that one team, which are picked at random or mostly random, doesn't end up with a bunch of ringers while others get shafted with a bunch rookies.
