Friday Afternoon Videos: Unforgettable

Well into the first week of the rodeo, we’ve seen performances from George Strait, Los Lonely Boys, and Reba. Tonight is Black Heritage Day, featuring Natalie Cole and R&B singer and songwriter KEM. So, we thought we’d feature Natalie Cole’s biggest hit, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” most memorable song and video, her 1991 studio produced “duet” with her father, Nat “Unforgettable.”

Natalie was apprehensive about capitalizing on her father’s name for many years before she decided to record the tribute CD. However, the CD turned out to be a tremendous success – reaching the top of Billboard’s chart, selling over 5 million copies, and earning her several Grammy’s. The footage of her father singing intertwined with her own was still rather new at that time and would later be duplicated by Hank Williams, Jr.

Saturday Night Live ended up poking fun of the collaboration with a skit called “Natalie Cole sings with all of her Dad’s old dead friends” (see above video). While it may not have been the best of tastes, it’s still pretty funny. Luckily, the fame she received from “Unforgettable” did not undermine her talent and she’s still considered one of the best R&B vocalists around.
