Woman on phone drives her car into lake

030207_lake.jpgA woman had to be rescued from her car Thursday morning after she drove into a lake, apparently because she was talking on her cell phone and didn't notice the road had ended. It happened around 9:30 a.m. at Oregold and Sunbright, just off Eldridge Parkway in northwest Harris County; police say the woman, Yu Hee Kim, drove her 2001 Lexus over a curb, across a grassy expanse and into one of the manmade lakes in the Twin Lakes subdivision. "She was talking on her cellular phone and apparently wasn't paying attention," Harris County sheriff's Lt. John Martin told the Chronicle.

Two maintenance men working nearby and a deputy, Huey Townley, rushed to the lake and found the car front end down in about 9 feet of water. They broke the window and cut the seat belt to get Kim out: "They went in there and started trying to get her out," sheriff's Capt. Paul Cordova said. "The deputy arrived and stripped down his uniform gear and got in there with them. The three of them were able to cut her out of her seat belt and got her out of the vehicle." Kim wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse when she was pulled from the car, but Cy-Fair volunteer firefighters administered CPR and were able to revive her. She was transported to Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital in critical condition, but KHOU reports she's now at home.

KHOU has raw aerial shots from the scene. If one thing is clear, it's that Kim was fortunate: "She's very lucky. She's very lucky that people were here and stepped in a quickly as they did," Mark Braswell with the Cy-Fair VFD told Channel 11.
