Houstonist has become aware of some slightly disturbing news: word on the skreet is that Leon's Lounge may be under new ownership. Leon's is a Houston institution like the Oilers, the Summit, AstroWorld and the AstroDome. See. We told you it was disturbing.
Actually news of a change in ownership doesn't always turn out to be bad. Just look what happened when Dan Snyder bought the Redskins. Oh wait. See wha ha happened was... Like we were saying, an ownership change isn't necessarily a bad thing. We just don't want Leon's to go the way of The Gallant Knight.
So here's what we think we know we heard. Details are still foggy, but as best we can gather Ms. Scarlett has sold the bar to another Houstonian in the libations business. Drunken hearsay, along with branded matches and koozies on the bar, seems to indicate a strong connection to Mugsy's, the classy-ish martini joint on Kirby. In fact, residual classiness has already turned up at Leon's. The swinging saloon doors leading into the stuffed animal room have been taken down.
We wish Ms. Scarlett and the new proprietor all the best in their new endeavors. However, should Leon's turn into some chichi bar with a velvet rope, we'll organize a flash mob of jackhammers to take it down.
Better check out Leon's for yourself before too many changes happen. Hopefully Lil Joe Washington will still be the ad hoc piano man in the back room.
