Houstonist Tech Buzz

Welcome to the Houstonist Tech Buzz, a run down on local tech news, blogs and events in a quick concise format. Think of it as a little, itty-bitty, micro SD card with current local tech news.

Over at the Chron, head geek and technology editor, Dwight Silverman, when not picking the top 15 geek movies, is busy finishing up his book on Windows Vista. He's even taking a respite from his gig at the weekly computer call in show, Technology Bytes, to meet his deadline. Go Dwight Go! Speaking of Technology Bytes, check out their review of The Slanket, it's a blanket with sleeves, it keeps you warm while leaving your arms free to do other things. Meanwhile, abc13.com lets us know what we can do with our old electronic junk. Shucks, it looks like we missed how to convert LP and cassettes to CD from the folks over at HAL-PC. They have a 'dummies series' that is only open to HAL-PC members, so we would've missed it anyway. We need to work on getting that membership, "Oh editor..." On local computer superstore news, it seems that CompUSA is going to close over half of its stores nationwide. They will be closing 126 stores in all! Rumor has it that there are two stores in Houston that are staying open, the Galleria location on Post Oak and the Royal Oaks Village store on Westheimer. All other stores will have liquidation sales and be closed by the end of May. Wrapping up this Tech Buzz is the Houston Technology Center who are hosting their monthly orientation seminars. Held every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 4-5pm, so you can, "learn how HTC accelerates the growth and success of emerging technology companies."

That's it for the Tech Buzz. If you have local tech stuff you want covered, drop us an email or leave a comment.
