Morning Roundup: The world is your oyster edition

Good morning, Houston. Did you enjoy a big oyster dinner over the weekend? Might want to stay close to the toilet: The FDA is advising people to steer clear of oysters from San Antonio Bay, about 60 miles northeast of Corpus Christi, after more than two dozen people became ill from eating them last month. The people developed nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other nasty symptoms; the oyster bed has been shut down pending an FDA investigation. The good news: The infected folks were all in Maryland. And why go that far when you can get food-borne illnesses so much closer to home?

>> A deadly weekend: There was no shortage of murders in Houston over the weekend: a man was found in a dumpster in Fort Bend County on Friday morning, another man was shot after a gang fight in a west Houston parking lot Friday night, two people were shot during a home invasion Saturday, and a fight at a northwest Houston apartment complex ended in gunfire early Sunday. In other news, we (and you, we imagine) are still alive.

>> Oops: Authorities suspect a man found dead beneath a southwest Houston power pole Friday fell to his death while trying to steal copper from a power line. It happened near South Post Oak and Gasmer, where the guy apparently scaled the pole using his own harness but slipped and fell 25 feet, landing on his head, before he could actually get hold of any copper. According to witnesses, bolt cutters and electrician's gloves were found near the man's body.

>> And something about trains: We're not sure what the deal was with vehicles and trains this weekend, but local news reported a couple of close calls: Yesterday in southeast Houston, a suspected drunk driver tried to beat a train at a crossing on Cullen Boulevard and ended up having his truck clipped, but that was nothing compared with the story of the train that slammed into a gravel truck in northwest Harris County on Friday. The driver was reportedly trying to beat the train at a crossing along Highway 290 and didn't make it; he jumped from the truck just before a train slammed into it. Three words for these folks: stupid but lucky. (Two more: but stupid.)

>> Today's weather: Ah, spring! Looks like we're in for a pretty good week, kicked off with an excellent Monday: Today should be totally sunny with a high of 67 and almost no wind. In other words, just about perfect. Look for a low of 40 under clear skies tonight, followed by a mostly sunny Tuesday with a high of 68 — perfect again — and more sun with temperatures climbing into the lower 70s through the end of the week. Enjoy!
