Orange Show, Allen Oldies and Art Car Trophies

02072007_orangeshow.jpgHere is a big, big Houstonist "heads up". The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art will re-open this weekend with some fantastic fanfare and events. This event is from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. this Saturday, it is FREE to attend and beer and wine will be available with proper I.D. (have we got your undivided attention, yet?). This marks a re-opening celebration of the Orange Show - plus (so proud of our Orange Show!!!) there will be a very special presentation as The Orange Show has recently been included in The National Register of Historic Places. But WAIT there's more, and it's free to attend, did we mention that?

Bring the little ones, so that they can take part in creating trophies for Houston's own, and the nation's largest - Art Car Parade! How cool is that? It's like supervised, art-based babysitting, while the 'rents have a couple adult beverages, or you can take part with them, family time! These are the coolest trophies, constructed of found objects - it's recycling and art, bonus!

02072007_allenhill.jpgTHE Allen Oldies Band will be performing. Yes, Houstonist spells oldies A-L-L-E-N, and if you don't, obviously, you cannot spell! Allen Hill, front man for The Allen Oldies, can do a herky that would make any cheerleader green. GREEN, with ENVY, he has that jump absolutely mastered to perfection, and does it in a tuxedo (it's fabulous). We know, we have seen it. You will dance, only because you have no choice in the matter, the music is infectious and fabulous. We are giving you enough notice that you can begin rehearsing your Mashed Potato(e), or your hippy, hippy, shake, shake move you perfected in the early Seventies. This performance alone is reason enough to attend, not to mention it is all free and beer and wine are available and you can distract your children, constructively (no more duct-taping them to that tree in the back yard).

02072007_Morrisdance.jpgNot an oldies person (we will try not to hold it against you, but, it won't be an easy task)? Brett Koshkin of Waxploitation DJs will be spinning some tunes, too. There's really no lack of entertainment. The Orange Show will also have ceremonial blessings of prosperity bestowed upon them by the Men of Houston Morris Dancers, who will also perform tradional English folk dancing. Rumour has it, that if you dig the folk dancing, most Sundays they practice at The Stag's Head, just some scuttlebutt. Good beer, WiFi, folk dancing - dare we ask for more?

To recap for you: National Award, Art Car Trophy making, free, The Allen Oldies Band, beer and wine, Brett Koshkin of Waxploitation, free, the Men of Houston Morris Dancers, outdoors with beer and wine. Plus, if you have not seen The Orange Show, you are remiss as a culturally aware Houstonian (or so we would have you believe - seriously, this promises to be a stellar event).

this is going to be a great event...and thank goodness it's on the register now - it's been a few years in the making
