'I didn't know this building had a drive-thru'

030907_tower.jpgWhen Vic Shapiro set out to drive to a doctor's appointment in the River Oaks Tower yesterday, we're sure he didn't expect to end up arriving there the way he did: After suffering a fender bender while turning left off Kirby Drive, Shapiro's Audi jumped a curb, went up three steps and through a set of glass doors, coming to a stop in a fountain in the office building's lobby.

Shapiro, 73, got into a minor accident with a BMW on Kirby — police cited him for failure to yield — and then he said his car just wouldn't stop. "I was surprised by the length of time that I was on the brake, definitely. And the car just wouldn't come to a stop,” he told KHOU. The car ended up driving through the doors of the River Oaks Tower, launching off a marble planter and landing in the fountain, just short of the building's elevators. Amazingly, no one was hurt. "This is a miracle that nobody was walking around, especially at this time, during business hours,” HPD Officer Jerry Flores said.

The cops say Shapiro was probably standing on the gas rather than the brake and that he might have hit the building doing 50 mph. And once you get over the idea that someone could have been seriously hurt, the whole thing is actually pretty cool: "I was amazed that such a chain of events could happen outside of Hollywood," Shapiro said.
