Saturday shelterporn

Just so you know, shelterporn isn't always about million-dollar mansions. Not saying that we don't love to look at those, but there's a lot to be said for modest, traditional homes as well — the kind that seem to be disappearing by the dozen every week inside the Loop. With that in mind, we're checking out this 1930s home in Westlawn Terrace, near Richmond and Shepherd, this week.

The house is the red-brick, quasi-English style place you see in many older Houston neighborhoods. There's a nice front yard, lots of windows, hardwood floors, arched doorways, French doors — all the features that make these houses so comfy-looking. A glassed-in porch serves as a sunroom with built-in shelving and a view of the lawn; the living room, with a fireplace, leads into a dining room and a kitchen with a breakfast bar (or is it a nook?). The bedrooms aren't huge, but seriously, is it really all that great to have to walk 25 feet when you just want to collapse into bed? With all that distance, you're likely to miss.

Houstonist is kind of a dork this way, but we love the improbable color combinations in old bathrooms. This house doesn't disappoint: The hall bath is finished in a combination of pink and purple tiles (walls and floor, for the record) that have survived the decades in excellent condition. True, pink's not our favorite color, but it's a lot better than some of the alternatives. Bedrooms: three. Bathrooms: two: Square feet: 1,680. Price: $399,000.

And: If you want to get a look at this house yourself, it'll be open Sunday — swing by 2106 Colquitt between 2 and 4 p.m.
