Hey, guess what? It rained again yesterday — and we mean a lot, in case you didn't notice. Not only was there a bunch of rain, but also high winds and hail of all varieties: "I got a lot of reports of hail — pea-sized, marble-sized, from Sugar Land to Tomball out toward Pasadena, Hobby Airport, League City — dime-sized hail is being reported there," KPRC meteorologist Frank Billingsley said.
Most areas reportedly got 1 to 2 inches of rain an hour as the storms moved through, and some parts of town had winds between 40 and 60 mph, Channel 2 reported. Flights at Hobby Airport were grounded between 4 and 6 p.m., and both Hobby and Intercontinental reported delays of up to three hours. On the roads, things weren't much better, with many low areas flooding — including the Southwest Freeway feeder roads at Greenbriar and Shepherd, where motorists were stranded for an hour and a half because of high water. Flooding also caused problems on several freeways, leading to closures of HOV lanes around town and some westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway near Washington Avenue.
One of the most bizarre weather-related stories, though, came from last night's storms, which brought high winds that flipped a couple of airplanes over at the West Houston Airport (small planes, for the record). Fortunately, the severe weather warnings have expired and it looks like we're in the clear — for a while, anyway.
