Another weekend, another closure on the Katy Freeway: Starting tonight, the eastbound lanes of the freeway will be closed from Highway 6 to Eldridge Parkway. Some good news, though: TxDOT learned a couple of things from last weekend's total closure in the area, which caused massive traffic backups in both directions — really? we're shocked! — so things might be better this time around. But, you know, don't count on it.
When the lanes close at 9 p.m. tonight, the left-hand diamond lanes will also be closed so jackasses can't use them to cut to the front of the traffic jam, like they did last week; also, TxDOT spokeswoman Janelle Gbur said more electronic message boards and signs will be posted to warn drivers of the closure (though we know how drivers are: You can have all the signs in the world, but they'll still drive right in). Another change from last week: motorists on the freeway at the closure will be allowed to exit two lanes at a time rather than using just one lane, Gbur said. Good call.
The closure will last until 5 a.m. Monday. Houstonist's tip: Avoid that side of town altogether.
