Weekend Breakfast at ‘The Flower’

Some weekends just seem to be made for relaxing, lazy mornings. Houstonist recently had a similar type weekend and decided to try out Spanish Flowers Mexican restaurant for breakfast. Spanish Flower is located on North Main at Airline Dr. in the Heights area. Although we went in the late morning, the restaurant is open (and breakfast is served) 24 hours a day (except Tuesday night through Wednesday morning).

The restaurant is popular among the “after-church” crowd and since we visited late on Sunday morning, we had about 15min wait for a table (just enough to make us really hungry). Once seated, we were immediately greeted with complimentary chips & salsa. If you haven’t had chips & salsa for breakfast you must be new to Houston…welcome. The salsa at the Flower is thin (not chunky) and almost sweet with some spice every so often, which makes for a great appetizer while looking through the menu. The breakfast menu is not extravagant, but yet has all the essentials of a Mexican (huevos rancheros, migas, etc…) and American style breakfasts (pancakes, eggs, etc…).

More after the jump...

If you are up for a fat physical challenge try the Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes, which also comes with two eggs and bacon/sausage – stick to your ribs kind of meal – we hear it is mighty delicious.

170307_spanish_flowers_tacos.jpgWe, however, we opted for the breakfast burritos (which are really just breakfast tacos) – part of our never-ending search to find the perfect breakfast taco. Each taco is $1.95 and includes your choice of two ingredients (25 cents extra per ingredient). Some of the options include: potato, cheese, bacon, sausage, and chorizo. We chose the classic bacon, egg, and cheese taco (or as we call it “The Triple Bypass”).

As always Houstonist was tempted by the $2 margarita, but we ordered some fresh squeezed orange juice instead, which was mighty terrific (if you like lots of pulp).

When the tacos showed up (only a few minutes after we ordered), we were also greeted with extra flour tortillas (who doesn’t love more tortillas). The tacos were stuffed to capacity and by the time we were done it was good thing that we had extra tortillas to shovel in the fall-out from the tacos. The bacon was a little too thick for our liking, but with enough salsa we soon forgot about the bacon.

When our check arrived, we were quite surprised to get a couple slices of pineapple as a palate cleanser – a very welcome treat after devouring the spicy tacos. As the food coma set-in and we rolled out of the restaurant we decided to walk-off some of the meal by walking by some historic bungalows nearby. Other options we pondered were hitting up the shops along 19th street or going to the farmers market just a few blocks away.

Oh how we long for the next lazy weekend.
