A five-hour SWAT team standoff in Montrose early this morning finally ended just after 6 a.m. when the suspect, who had been holed up in a building at Montrose and Kipling, finally turned himself in. Police say the situation began just before midnight, when the suspect — 28-year-old Anthony Kroger — shot a woman in the cheek near the jawline; she drove herself to her home on West Gray and called the cops. When officers arrived at the shooting scene, the building where the Hot Tops salon is located, Kroger refused to give himself up.
Authorities say Kroger had two pit bulls and a couple of weapons with him, and they believe he was high on drugs: "As police cleared the second level, they were able to recover two weapons — one handgun and one long-barrel gun. I don't know if it was a rifle or a shotgun. I suspect it was a rifle because they also recovered two .23 rounds and they also have recovered so far a pretty large amount of marijuana," HPD Capt. Duane Ready told KPRC. A four-to-six-square-block area surrounding Hot Tops was cordoned off while police tried to get to Kroger; the SWAT team eventually took control of the first and second floors of the building, and at around 6:10 a.m., Kroger turned himself in.
According to KHOU, the shooting victim told police that the shooting was accidental; she was taken to Ben Taub and is expected to recover. Kroger faces aggravated assault, weapons violations and possible narcotics charges.
