What would the week be without a story involving a fleeing crime suspect, a reckless driver, a police officer's crushed foot and gunfire? A week not worth living, Houstonist would say. Fortunately, we have just such a story: A woman was arrested Wednesday night after running over a cop's foot while she was apparently trying to help a narcotics-raid suspect escape the police.
It happened in the 3800 block of Delano Street, where undercover HPD Narcotics Division officers were conducting an operation. They tried to arrest a man, who fled; a nearby officer saw someone matching his description getting into a green Nissan driven by a woman. The officer, M.M. Walker, ordered the woman to stop the car, but instead, she put the car in reverse and backed off down the street, running into parked cars as she went. The woman finally backed into a fence at Blackshear Elementary. Walker tried to reach in through the driver's side window to turn the car off, but about that time the woman put the car in gear and drove forward, running over Walker's foot; he was knocked off balance, drew his gun and fired at the driver's door, which apparently stopped the woman.
The 20-year-old woman, who wasn't hurt, faces charges of bodily injury of a public servant. As for the man, he fled — looking, we imagine, for a better getaway driver.
