IMHO: Matt Schaub as the Texans Quarterback

The Houston Texans needed to do something to improve their offensive production. It's no secret that David Carr's tenure as Texans quarterback was growing short. Yesterday, the Texans inked a deal with Matt Schaub and ended speculation about the quarterback situation. Signing Schaub, second fiddle to The Vick in Atlanta, completed the trade terms and effectively placed Carr on the trading block. Texans GM, Rick Smith, left little doubt as to their intentions during the "Schaub Presser" saying, "Matt is our starting quarterback and we’re trying to help David find another place."

Houstonist hit the street to get your take on the situation.
+ Do you think the Texans made the right move by signing Schaub and trading Carr?
+ If so, why? If not, what do you think they should have done?
+ Is there a particular spot that they should try to improve by trading Carr, i.e. get a running back, defensive back, etc.?

20070323_tshaw.jpgT. Shaw - West U.: Yes and no. I have no problems with the give-up on Carr and moving on to a fresh approach, but there's better answers out there than Matt Schaub, especially considering what they paid him. I'll give you Philip Rivers, but other than that, how many successful QBs have we seen out of the ACC in the last 20 years? There was Vick (Va Tech) and Hasselbeck (BC) though they weren't ACC when he was there. Vick still has a lot to prove, as does Rivers for that matter. Schaub is a gamble. And there's been no shortage of high draft picks turn bust. Do you have to go back to Boomer? I follow the trends, and I definitely believe in historical trends by conference.

As for what they could trade Carr for, is there a more ironic move than trading him for OL help? Probably only if they packaged him with Mario and traded for Reggie Bush.

20070323_ajm.jpgAJ M. - Rice U.: I have a thought but it has little to do with the actual playing of football. I'm sick of looking at Carr and am more than happy to have anyone else who might be less smug with himself. Without actually accomplishing better play, that is more than enough improvement for me.
20070323_tp.jpgTP - Oak Forest: I like it. I think it's nice that they finally committed to going in a new direction. As for the draft picks, the first one is a wash. It basically cost them a second round pick this year and next. If they can make a trade to get back one of the second round picks, then it will work.
20070323_kateyf.jpgKatey F. - Memorial Heights: It was the right move to get rid of Carr. They should have done it last year. Two words: Vince & Young. It's not just about ability; it's also [about] the excitement that the player can create for the fans. It's entertainment after all. Texans have missed a great opportunity to inject excitement - either thru Vince or Reggie. Vince Young = X factor. David Carr = boring factor. Trade Carr for someone exciting.
20070323_seanm.jpgseanymac - West End Terrace: Schaub is a decent pick given the QBs available. Schaub seems like he could be slightly better than Carr: 2 inches taller, 2 years younger, and has had decent success as Vick's backup. At the same time, it's completely different to be a starter than a backup (not unlike the difference between a #1 WR and a #2 WR, see Eric Moulds) because defenses prepare for specifically you. The part of this deal that I don't like is the Texans have already named Schaub the starting QB. Why not foster some competition in camp and give the job to the best player? Who knows if Schaub will be any good as a starter? I certainly didn't watch him at UVA. Who watches ACC football anyway? Seriously.
