Morning Roundup: A Streetcar Named Discord edition

Good morning, Houston. If you live anywhere along the proposed University light rail line, here are a couple of chances to express your opinion on the choo-choo, pro or con: Metro will hold public meetings today and tomorrow. The first, from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, will be at the Renaissance Hotel at Greenway for folks along the west end of the line (between West Alabama, Main Street/Wheeler Station, Bissonnet and the Hillcroft Transit Center); the second, from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the UH Hilton, is for those along the eastern section (between the Eastwood Transit Center, Dumble, Rosedale and Main Street/Wheeler Station). Remember, if you don't go, you can't complain ... legitimately, anyway.

>> We're flattered, but please stop following us: So you think you're not being stalked? Well, according to researchers at Sam Houston State University, there's a nearly 20 percent chance that you are: In a survey of 701 Texans, 18 percent said they had been, or were being, targeted by a stalker. Of those, 35 percent said they had received harassing telephone calls, while 34 percent said their stalkers had stolen items from their homes, cars or offices. The study, believed to be the first done on stalking in Texas, also found that 75 percent of stalking victims experience emotional or other personal problems, from anger to sleeplessness, as a result of their experiences.

>> Six entries, all Harmony: Brigette Berry's eighth-grade class at League City Intermediate School was among six student groups nationwide that came up with Harmony, the name for a new international space station module. The 21-foot-long chamber will connect the station's U.S., European and Japanese laboratories; Harmony will launch this summer or fall, and the labs will launch late this year and early in 2008. The naming contest, open to American students in kindergarten through high school, was sponsored by NASA.

>> Meat, glorious meat: KTRK's Joe Williams and Mike McGuff have undertaken a study close to Houstonist's heart: a survey of Houston's 10 best barbecue joints, from Burns and Williams in Acres Homes to the venerable Goode Co. to one of our favorites, Thelma's. Kinda makes us wish we were digging into a plate of brisket right now ... uh ... yeah, we'll be right back.

>> This week's weather: Looks kind of wet. Highs should be in the upper 70s and lows in the mid-60s every day; what varies is the chance of rain. Today's there's a 30 percent chance of showers, increasing to 50 percent overnight and through the early afternoon Tuesday. The sun should come out later Tuesday, leading to a pretty nice Wednesday; at the end of the week, the chance of rain will creep back in and will stick around through the weekend. Don't forget your umbrella and appropriate footwear.

There's also a west-end meeting at the same place today from 11am - 1pm. I don't know if there are options tomorrow though.

Right, the morning sessions (11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Renaissance for the west section and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the UH Hilton for the east section) are "open houses," but aren't identified specifically as planning workshops, so I'm not sure what the difference is. Thanks for pointing that out, though.
