Remember when the Astrodome was considered to be the 8th wonder of the world? It is amazing how quickly times have changed…now the redevelopment is struggling to meet funding deadlines for the $450 million project. In August 2006, the Astrodome Redevelopment Corporation (catchy name) signed a letter of intent proposing a 1,000 room 4-star luxury hotel and parking garage inside the previous sports stadium. The first 'proof of funding' deadline passed in December of 2006, however an extension was granted until March 1st, 2007.
The Astrodome Redevelopment Corporation has found an undisclosed New York bank interested in funding the project; however Harris County wants further proof that the bank is committed to the development. Scott Hanson, president with Astrodome Redevelopment, says "It's happening. It's just a timing issue. Sometimes the wheels don't turn as fast as we'd like them to." Similar statements were once uttered about the former tenants of the Astrodome.
Since there are no other serious proposals for the redevelopment, the missed deadlines are unlikely to have any implication on the project. Willie Loston, executive director of the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp., says "There's not a line of people out there knocking our door down to do something in the Astrodome." Sounds like a great opportunity for Houstonist to propose the world’s largest BBQ pit - Texans tailgating would never be the same.
Assuming no further delays (*ahem*) the redevelopment construction would begin late next year.
The Astrodome holds a special place in Houstonist's logo heart, and we are interested to here what you have to say about our once beloved dome? Drop us a line in the comments.

Sadly, no one likes my idea of turning the Astrodome into a gigantic aquarium. Install some enormous clear windows, and then we'd have something to look at when we're stuck in traffic on 610.
Who knew that Houston had a demand for a 4-star 1000 room hotel. Maybe it could fill up during OTC but I couldn't even see the rodeo pulling in that many people. Most rodeo-goers would opt for driving home for the night.
i always liked watching baseball games there. . .
Put a massive, inflatable floor in it and make the world's largest Moonwalk.
One thing I remember about the Dome, especially as a little kid, was how I always felt like I was going to fall out of my seat when I sat in the upper deck. I wonder if they can replicate that in hotel rooms — maybe tilted beds that make you feel like you're going to roll out?
