Morning Roundup: Why not try the steak? edition

Good morning, Houston. We initially kicked off the day with a story about warnings of tainted fish in Clear Lake, but it turns out it's not the Clear Lake around here — it's one in Panola County, East Texas. Two Clear Lakes? Who knew? (We would have, had we checked online. Oops.) So you'll be happy to know that there aren't any seafood warnings out for our area, but that doesn't mean we're not in danger from flying chicken: On the eastbound side of the Katy Freeway near Dairy Ashford, a truck carrying chicken parts lost its load, bringing traffic to a halt. TxDOT crews closed the eastbound lanes while the mess was cleaned up; the truck didn't stop, which we imagine means there's a puzzled truck driver — and a bunch of angry chicken lovers — somewhere.

>> Trouble for the hospital district?: The Harris County Hospital District on Tuesday unsealed a $15 million settlement related to mishandled insurance claims — a settlement reached after Robert McCaslin, a patient account representative, turned whistleblower. McCaslin noticed that some claims weren't being filed according to the law, which requires employees to seek payment from a third party or private insurance companies before filing directly with Medicare or Medicaid. "It's not only local taxpayer dollars but federal dollars they were being used to pay these claims improperly," McCaslin's attorney, Mitchell Kreindler, said. "Taxpayers were getting hit in all directions on this one." McCaslin — who will get a cash reward that could total more than $2 million — said he's satisfied with the settlement and encouraged others to come forward when they see things going wrong at their workplaces. "It's important to do the right thing and have that motivation and courage to step forward," he said.

>> Valenti hospitalized: Houstonian Jack Valenti, the former presidential adviser and Motion Picture Association of America head, was hospitalized last week after suffering a stroke. According to friend and Warner Bros. chief Barry Meyer, the 85-year-old Valenti remains at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center in Baltimore, where "the doctors are encouraged by his progress." No more details were available.

>> We're number one!: Here's something to be proud of: Houston has regained its place as the No. 1 city for last-minute income-tax filing, bumping San Diego out of the top spot. Houston last held the title in the 2003 tax season; we and Chicago have consistently been at the top of the list in the last few years. The rankings were determined by the number of electronic tax filings done through TurboTax between April 14 and 17, 2006, the last few days of the filing period; after Houston and San Diego, Chicago, New York City and Austin round out this year's top five.

>> Today's weather: Looks like a pretty nice day: After patchy fog burns off this morning, expect partly cloudy skies and a high around 81. Tonight, the temperature should drop to the mid-60s, with some clouds still hanging around.

The warning is for Clear Lake in Panola County, not Harris County.
