We know you just had lunch not long ago, but it's time to start thinking about your dinner plans tonight. And oy, just look at you! You're all skin and bones these dayswhat you need is some protein and fat. Houstonist wants our readers to look strong, sanguine, and healthy, so we've drawn up a list of steaks that you might want to consider for tonight. Today's the hump day, after all, and we're still in Lent so no steaks on Friday for you.
Cosmos Cafe
69 Heights Blvd
Strip Steak $8
John Evans Band live tonight
If you're feeling cheap, take advantage of this steak special on Wednesday nights. Mind you, it's skirt steak, so you'll be working out your forearms pretty well trying to cut through this thing. Of all the steaks on this list, however, this is per ounce the cheapest (around $0.67/oz, actually), and it comes with nice fries. The real reason to take advantage of this would be the pitchers of beer and the John Evans Band playing tonight, providing some sharp tunes for eating, drinking, and skanky-tonk dancing (to cancel out the first two). The Cosmos dropped its cover charge for Wednesday nights to boot, so rejoice in your tardiness.
Little Woodrow's
2306 Brazos
2301 West Alabama
16 oz. Rib Eye $13
The other steak special particular to Wednesdays on this list, Little Woodrow's (only at these two locations) gets out their grill and serves a mean one (pictured above) with a baked potato. The experience is roughly equal to having your friendthat one friend who's extremely proud if not territorial regarding their steak grilling abilities, you know who we're talking aboutfiring you up a pretty solid rib eye on one of their good days. The potato comes with all the fixin's on the side, including a lovely small mountain of fake bacon pieces. The value's not bad for eating out ($0.81/oz), and the beer selection at Woodrow's should close the deal.
Picazo Restaurant Bar and Grill
1421 Preston St.
22 oz. Chicago-Cut Rib Chop $39
Now we're moving on to fancy stuff: $1.77 per ounce. For all of you stuck in downtown this evening, check out the new Picazo if you're looking for a decent dry-aged steak without the pomp of those good ol' boys Vic & Anthony, or perhaps try it if your dining companions want to graze on other completely unrelated and much cheaper items on the kooky menu. (Cheeseburgers, chicken mole, pasta primavera, and muffalettas? What?) As for this massive steak itself, don't expect anything sensational or particularly sophisticated for the price, but it's a nice, ribby change of pace from the usual porterhouse for two. The rib chop is served with some interesting and tasty sweet potato hashbrowns, and smaller fillets and steaks are also available on Picazo's menu.
The Glass Wall
933 Studewood
Rib Eye $27
Red-X Petite Sirah $11.50/glass
On early weekday nights this trendy Californish bistro isn't too packed or crazy, so don't be intimidated to swing by tonight for this very excellent rib eye. When Houstonist visited recently, the steak was among the best we've had in recent memory. Grilled masterfully and packed with a nice, subtle sweet flavor, this might be an argument for never stepping into a stuffy and dark traditional steak house again. It's served with a ridonkulously delicious gruyere and bacon gratin in addition to some greenbeans that (through black magic, surely) manage to raise the humble vegetable to heretofore unseen heights of savory heaven. Please note that others might not have shared our enthusiasm for this ribeye, but it warmed our little heart anyway.
