Police investigating Poppa Burger shooting

041107_shooting.jpgPolice today are trying to make sense of a shooting last night at Poppa Burger, the venerable Near Northside burger joint — and though they know how the incident apparently started, they're not sure exactly how it ended. Investigators say the victim and his girlfriend were at the restaurant around 11 p.m.; while she went to the bathroom, he and another man got into an argument. When the argument was apparently over, the victim walked back to the restroom area and was shot to death. "A short time after he was seen back there, multiple shots were fired," HPD Sgt. C.W. Howard told KTRK. "Right now, we don't have any witness and are unable to link if the argument is related to the shooting or not."

The problem is this, KHOU reports: The argument was recorded by security cameras at the restaurant, but whatever happened near the restrooms wasn't. Police believe at least six shots were fired, but they don't know who the shooter was and whether the shooting had anything to do with the argument. Oddly enough, as Channel 13 notes, there was a very similar shooting at Poppa Burger two years ago: On April 2, 2005, two men got into an argument at the restaurant and one of the men (and a woman) ended up being shot to death. Seriously, how can people get so angry when they're surrounded by hamburgers? We'll never understand.
