As best described by www.yurisnight.net, "Yuri's Night is like the St Patricks Day or Cinco de Mayo for space." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Another holiday giving us an excuse to drink ourselves into oblivion (or the Milky Way). Count us in.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on April 12th, 1961.
"Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People of the world, let us safeguard and enhance this beauty — not destroy it!" In addition, the US Space Shuttle first launched on April 12th, 1981. Over the years, April 12th has become celebrated as one day when all the world can come together and celebrate the power and beauty of space and what it means for each of us. Like getting high. On life. And Space. Yeah.
In Houston, organizers will celebrate at Pub Fiction, 2303 Smith St., in Midtown with live music, drink, food and a drawing for a free ticket to fly aboard Zero Gravity Corp's Boeing 727 airplane. Through a series of high altitude roller coaster-like maneuvers, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., based aircraft rises and dives steeply enough to create 20 to 30 seconds of weightlness for its passengers.
"We want people to get excited about space, and this is a great experience," said Michael Frostad , a member of the Yuri's Night organizing committee in Houston.
Raffle tickets for the Zero G flight can be purchased for $5 until April 10 over the internet at www.yurisnighthouston.net.
The Yuri's Night celebration at Pub Fiction begins at 6 p.m. There is no cover, but there is a $10 charge for entrance to "Yuri's Room" at the pub, which will feature food and drink specials. The admission charge includes a chance to win the Zero Gravity flight. Admission to Yuri's Room can be purchased ahead for $8.
