No, that's not a typo. Houston can't be beautiful without u — uh, you! Tomorrow is Houston Beautiful Day, so let's make Houston shine! The day coincides with the beginning of The Great American Cleanup, which lasts until May 31st. Over the next month and a half, Houstonians will plant trees, pick up trash, and paint over graffiti, among other things, to improve the appearance of their neighborhoods. You can volunteer here to organize a cleanup in your neighborhood. You even get free trashbags! What a deal.
Keep Houston Beautiful is a division of Keep America Beautiful, which sponsors The Great American Cleanup. KAB is the nation's largest community improvement network. You can find a full list of Keep Houston Beautiful news and events on their website here, as well as a comprehensive list of links and resources.
In a related event, Council Member Peter Brown will announce the winners of the Go Green Houston curbside recycling competition Tuesday at City Hall at 1:30 pm. There will be winners for most improved and best recyclers in the city. The competition's aim was to promote the Mayor’s environmental plan and vision of “Making Houston a Model Environmental City” and to encourage recycling participation.
