041707_movie.jpg Movies Houstonians Love: Richard Linklater presents Some Came Running

Best known for his superb recreation of the 70's slacker era in 1993's Dazed and Confused (writer & director), Richard Linklater could quite possibly be responsible for writing some of the most quoted movie lines of all time. Just thinking about it makes us "wanna dance!"

In 2006, Richard Linklater´s back-to-back films A Scanner Darkly and Fast Food Nation received enormous critical and popular acclaim. His 13 feature films run the gamut from the indie classic Slacker (1991) to The School of Rock (2003) to the Oscar-nominated Before Sunset (2004). Born in Houston, Linklater makes his home in Austin, Texas, where he founded the Austin Film Society in 1985.

In his pick for the Movies Houstonians Love Series, Some Came Running (Directed by Vincente Minnelli, 1958) Frank Sinatra plays a disillusioned and aimless writer who returns to his hometown from the U.S. Army with an unpublished manuscript and a floozie (Shirley MacLaine). He gets romantically involved, much to MacLaine´s chagrin, with a teacher (Martha Hyer), who helps him get his book into shape, and links up with a gambler (Dean Martin), who never removes his hat, not even in the bath. Director Vincente Minnelli manages to create a potent small-town atmosphere and launched the career of MacLaine, who is both funny and heartbreaking.
