Go Green Houston winners announced

041807_recycle.gifAs promised, Mayor White and and City Council announced the four winners of the Go Green Houston Recycling Program to promote Houston’s vision of “Making Houston a Model Environmental City.” The program was announced last June in order to promote the mayor's environmental plan and vision to increase recycling initiatives in the areas of participation and tonnage for the neighborhoods that received curbside recycling services. Without further ado, the winners are...

Each winner receives $5,000 towards a neighborhood project in their community, plus the mayor's personal affection:

We applaud Houston’s neighborhoods and I am confident that the commitment will continue throughout our great city. This competition aims to increase the public’s awareness of the importance of recycling.

Houstonians are, of course, encouraged to continue recycling year-round. You can call 311 or visit the city's website for more information about Houston's recycling program.

So, when is the City going to bother to put up simple signs pointing the way to the recycling center on Harvard St near Center Street.

I'd wager 90% of Heights residents don't know it's there and 70% drive past it (on Waugh) weekly.

Yeah, it seems like they have one sign (on Washington Ave.), but it would still be hard to find the Harvard St. center if you didn't already know where it was.

Another thing about that place: I know women who aren't generally afraid of things who won't go there because it's so isolated (relatively speaking) and there are so many places someone could hide. I can't say that I blame them. Too bad there's not a well-marked recycling center in that area that makes people feel comfortable.
