Houston ranks #4 for African-Americans

041807_be.gifWhat's that? Surely you're not tired of hearing about where Houston ranks on this last and that list. And this list. And that list. Buck up and listen to this one. Falling just behind Washington DC, Atlanta, and Raleigh-Durham, Houston ranks fourth on Black Enterprise's list of the top cities for African-Americans. The cities were chosen from more than 2,000 user surveys on the magazine's website and the rankings are based on median household income, percentage of households earning more than $100,000, percentage of businesses owned, percentage of college graduates, unemployment rates, home loan rejections and homeownership rates. Sounds like pretty thorough criteria, and we're not surprised that Houston ranks high, considering the strength of our African-American community.

Houston is still down from its #1 ranking in 2001, but up from #5 in 2004. Big cities like New York, LA, and Chicago are conspicuously absent, making Houston the largest city on the list (but still one of the best in terms of cost of living). Rounding out this year's top 10 were Nashville, Dallas, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Jacksonville.

May's Black Enterprise is available on newsstands starting today, and it contains full profiles and key statistics for each of the top ten cities.
