A woman whose husband was shocked by a taser-wielding HPD officer while he was holding the couple's newborn is considering suing both the police department and the Woman's Hospital of Texas, where the incident took place.
The mother, Jacqueline Gray, says that her baby, Carla, who fell to the ground after her father was shocked, hasn't been the same since the incident, though she appeared unhurt when examined immediately after.
The taser was fired by an off-duty police officer working as security guard, who confronted the baby's father, William Lewis, in an elevator around 1:30 a.m. as he tried to exit the building with the baby. The police said he hadn't followed stndard discharge procedures and became "belligerent", threatening to cause a "hostage situation" if the officers and hospital workers wouldn't let him leave. Hospital officials said neither of the parents had requested to leave or made clear any plans to ask for a discharge. Police say that the officer fired from opposite Lewis, and that the current shouldn't have gone through him into the baby.
"The hospital was irresponsible [and] the officer was irresponsible," said Sadiyah Evangelista, who represents the mother. It's not clear yet why Lewis had decided to leave the hospital with Carla in the middle of the night.
