UST’s History and Philosophy Departments co-sponsor the lecture "Trying Galileo" at 4 p.m. Monday, April 23rd. The lecture will be delivered by Thomas F. Mayer, professor of history at Augustana College. Mayer does not adopt the predominant view that Galileo was a victim of intolerance and superstition, but argues that Galileo’s fate was largely his own fault. The lecture will focus on Galileo’s two trials before the Roman Inquisition, first in 1615-16 and again in 1632-33, the second leading to his condemnation for believing the sun was the center of the universe.

Mayer, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, is the author of seven books and more than 30 journal articles and book chapters, and has given numerous public lectures and presentations in renaissance and reformation history. Among Mayer’s books are Reginald Pole, Prince and Prophet ( Cambridge , 2000) and a five-volume edition of Pole’s correspondence, the fourth volume of which is in press (Ashgate, 2002–).
