With a Mexican food restaurant on nearly every corner of our fair city, it can be difficult to find any standouts among the crowd. Houstonist recently visited Sylvia’s enchilada kitchen for lunch and can safely say this is a hidden gem for Mexican food. Located at 12637 Westheimer (between Eldridge and Dairy Ashford) the lunch rush comes from the Westchase District and Energy Corridor crowds (think liquid lunch meets power lunch).
As the name suggests Sylvia’s signature is enchiladas – 12 different types on the lunch menu alone – however, if enchiliadas aren’t your thing, Sylvia’s also has the standard Mexican fair (tortilla soup, taco salad, chalupas, quesadillas, etc…). We opted for the Mexico City enchiladas (sounds Authentic right?) – two chicken enchiladas with salsa verde (green sauce for you novices) topped with sour cream and served with rice and beans for $6.95. While waiting for our food, we devoured the seemingly endless chips and salsa. The smooth salsa is served hot and is full of flavor without being too spicy (a common trend for all of Sylvia’s food).
The food arrived promptly and covered every square inch of the (very hot) plate. After letting the food cool to a reasonable temperature, we dug in. In every bite, we experienced more flavor – first the salsa verde then the spiced shredded chicken. While the Mexican rice and refried beans were average, they complemented the savory enchiladas quite nicely. For this tasty lunch, we joined the Clean Plate Club even though we knew it may be painful later.
While we waited in line to pay our bill at the counter, we noticed that Sylvia herself was making the rounds to the tables to check up on the food and service (Her picture is on the cover of the menu in case you wondered how we knew it was Sylvia). As we paid, we read the Marvin Zindler 2006 Blue Ribbon award proudly displayed at the register. Total lunch time was 45minutes, not too bad for Sylvia’s fresh ingredients and homemade recipes (although we were at the tail end of the lunch rush)
Sylvia’s is open for lunch and dinner during the week and open for breakfast (migas anyone?), lunch and dinner on the weekend.
And just in case you can’t get enough of the food, Sylvia’s also offers “hands-on” Cooking Classes throughout the year.
