Good morning, Houston. We forgot to mention a bit of news last week: According to ForbesTraveler.com, Houston is the sixth-best restaurant city in the country. "San Antonio may have a far more manifest Mexican food culture, but Houston, which spirals forever outward, has far more breadth and depth," the site said; it specifically cited upper-end Tony's, Café Annie and Américas, but also mentioned the Breakfast Klub, with its "irresistible" chicken and waffles. Mmm.
>> Sheila steps into TSU fray: U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) has called on the U.S. Department of Education to prevent a state takeover of Texas Southern University, claiming Gov. Rick Perry's plan to put the troubled university under a state conservator violates Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by placing "undue burdens on black students." A state conservator would temporarily take control of the university's finances, with the ability to make personnel decisions and change administrative structure. No word on whether the federal government will intervene.
>> Was drag racing to blame for Pasadena wreck: Police say a five-car pileup on Spencer Highway yesterday afternoon might have started when two drag-racing Ford Mustangs ran a red light. Among the vehicles involved in the crash were an ambulance — no one inside was hurt — and a Ford Expedition carrying a family of four, all of whom ended up in the hospital. Seven people were injured in all, including the driver of one of the Mustangs; the other one fled the scene. Police are looking for that second Mustang, described as a gray older model with the word "hot" across the rear window.
>> Mutilated baby released from hospital: Holden Gothia, the infant whose genitals were severed in a March 13 attack his mother blamed on the family dog, was released from Memorial Hermann Hospital this weekend. Holden, now 3 months old, will live with his father's older sister until permanent custody is decided; he must use a catheter and have regular care of his wounds. Investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what happened in the incident, which earlier reports said wasn't consistent with a dog attack. Holden's mother — who was caring for him at the time of the mutilation — hasn't been charged with anything, but has been barred from having any contact with the child.
>> This week's weather: Expect some rain tomorrow and Wednesday, with sun and warm temperatures the rest of the week. Today should be breezy and partly cloudy, with an afternoon high around 82; tonight, look for a low near 70. The rain chance moves in tomorrow and intensifies through the night and into Wednesday, finally clearing up by early Thursday morning.
