M.J. Khan wins award for immigrants, naturally

042407_immigrants.jpgYesterday, 50 new American citizens were sworn in at a naturalization ceremony at the State Department headquarters in Washington, D.C. During the ceremony, Houston City Council Member M.J. Khan also received the prestigious "Americans by Choice" award. The award honors the outstanding achievements of naturalized U.S. citizens. Recipients "have demonstrated their commitment to this country through civic participation, professional achievement, and responsible citizenship" and have shown "unwavering dedication to the common civic values that unite Americans."

M.J. Khan is a native of Pakistan, and was elected to City Council in 2003. He represents District F, which includes Sharpstown, Gulfton, and Alief - a very politically active and diverse constituency. Houstonist has mentioned Council Member Khan's work with the State Department before, as a representative for the U.S. State Department's U.S. Speaker and Specialist Program in Qatar. He has a long record of community service in our city and we're proud that he's a Houstonian.
