This Saturday, from high noon until 7:00 p..m., Houston Roller Derby's Machete Betties are holding a fundraiser and mudbug bash at the West Alabama Ice House @ 1919 West Alabama. If you are a roller derby fan, or just want to see some hot chicks, while consuming even hotter crawfish and ice cold beer, then this is a great way for you to spend a Saturday afternoon! There will be some great live music for your further entertainment and door prizes also.
Why? What do they need to raise money for? Well, we'll do some 'splaining for you. The Derby Girls don't get paid to skate and get all bruised up. In fact, they are responsible for all of their uniforms and equipment plus they have to either have health insurance, scads of money or the ability to set their own bones and sew themselves up, because everything is on their individual monetary shoulders. Monies raised at Derby bouts is typically donated to a different charity each month, all skaters, announcers, volunteers, and various and sundry staff-elites are doing what they do because they are criminally insane love the sport!
So, head on over to the West Alabama Ice House and grab yourself a cold brew, feast on some bugs, listen to some great music and ogle some Derby Girls. What else are you going to do on a Saturday afternoon? Laundry? Support the Machete Betties, those fishnets and garters get pricey what with all the bodies that were flying at the last bout - we know some garments were a little worse for wear!
