Fire investigators searched three Needville area homes yesterday in connection with the fire that damaged of Needville High School on Monday morning, but no arrests have been made yet. The fire, which destroyed the school's administrative building and science wing, was intentionally set, investigators said earlier this week: Someone entered the building early Monday by throwing a concrete block through a side door, and fires were set in two separate locations.
The investigators — from the Fort Bend County fire marshal's office, HFD, the Texas Rangers and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — searched the homes of two current NHS students and a former student. It's not clear yet why those individuals raised suspicion or exactly what the investigators were looking for, but we may have more word on that today: According to the Chronicle, officials have scheduled a news conference for this morning to discuss the case. For now, Fort Bend County Assistant DA Mike Elliott is remaining tight-lipped: "The case is progressing," he told the Chron. "Those guys are working hard."
According to KPRC, detectives said they believe students set the fire, perhaps to cover up for bad grades or low scores on the TAKS test — remember that most of the Needville students' completed TAKS booklets were destroyed in the fire. But seriously, haven't we learned yet that setting a fire to cover your tracks doesn't work? Apparently not.
